Examining Nursing Specialties

You have probably seen one or more of the many inspirational posters about decisions. A visual such as a forked road or a street sign is typically pictured, along with a quote designed to inspire.

Decisions are often not so easily inspired. Perhaps you discovered this when choosing a specialty within the MSN program. This decision is a critical part of your plan for success, and you no doubt want to get it right. This is yet another area where your network can help, as well as other sources of information that can help you make an informed choice.

Reflect on your decision to pursue a specialty within the MSN program, including your professional and academic goals as they relate to your program/specialization.

Post an explanation of your choice of a nursing specialty within the program. [Essay Help]: American Nurses Association, Emergency Nurses Association, National League for Nursing and National Institute of Nursing Research

American Nurses Association, Emergency Nurses Association, National League for Nursing and

For this discussion, four nursing organizations that I chose were, American Nurses Association, Emergency Nurses Association, National League for Nursing and National Institute of Nursing Research. All these organizations play a significant role in the profession of nursing in its unique way.

The American Nurses Association is the largest nursing organization in the United States. It has a tremendous amount of political influence. The American Nurses Association’s federal legislative agenda is focused on advancing the essential function nurses play in the welfare of patients and the health of the country, as well as ensuring a robust nursing profession in the future (Craig, et al., 2020). The association states its mission as “As the philanthropic arm of the American Nurses Association (ANA), our vision is to achieve ‘a healthy world through the power of nursing’, and this is more relevant today than ever. With the future of health care changing so dramatically, nurses can revolutionize the approach to care for the better” (American Nurses Foundation, 2021).

The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) is committed to advocating on federal legislative and regulatory problems impacting emergency nurses and patients in the same manner that nurses advocate on behalf of their clients. The legislative agenda of the ENA comprises the following items: meetings with political representatives on Capitol Hill on a regular basis; keeping track of federal legislation that may have an impact on emergency nursing; making submissions to regulatory agencies on programs and policies that impact emergency nurses (Government Relations – Emergency Nurses Association, 2022). The ENA mission is to: “advance excellence in emergency nursing. Our vision is to be the premier organization for the emergency nursing community worldwide” (About ENA, 2022).

The National League for Nursing was established in 1893 as the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses. It was the first nursing organization to be established in the United States. The National League for Nursing’s objective is to be the industry leader in creating standards, developing excellence and innovation, and advocating for all forms of academic and continuous learning initiatives in nursing. The National League of Nursing’s goal in the legislative arena is to design and promote regulations that have an impact on nursing professional expansion (Public Policy, 2022). The National League for Nursing states its missions as: “Promote excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce to advance the health of our nation and the global community.” (Core Values, 2022)

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is a branch of the National Institutes of Health in the United States of America. The organization promotes clinical and fundamental research in order to develop a scientific foundation for the nursing care of persons throughout their lives. It encompasses all phases of nursing care, including the treatment of patients throughout illness and rehabilitation, the reduction of the risk of disease and disability, and the advocacy of healthy lifestyles (National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), 2020). The National Institute of Nursing Research is a federal agency for conducting and supporting nursing research which has a significant effect in nursing as a profession on a national level. While the organization itself doesn’t have active legislative initiatives, it influences nursing profession via research. The mission of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is to “promote and improve the health of individuals, families, and communities” (National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), 2020).

It is nearly impossible to learn EVERYTHING about EVERY SINGLE drug we encounter. While it is important for us to look up select information about unfamiliar medications we administer, we can know the general indications and nursing interventions related to a drug if we learn key information about the drug classifications. For this assignment, you will be collecting information about different groups of drugs, or drug classifications, found in your Pharmacology textbook and creating a PowerPoint presentation (5-10 slides long).

Choose a drug classification (Examples: Typical or Atypical Antipsychotics, Anxiolytics, SSRI, Tricyclic Antidepressants, MAOI, mood stabilizers, opiates, NSAIDs, etc.) that is discussed in Unit Six or Unit Seven in Pharmacology: A Patient-Centered Nursing Process Approach textbook and then use your Davis’s Drug Guide or another SCHOLARLY source to provide the following information:

Summary of the Drug Classification (what different medical conditions are these drugs used to treat?) and list the names of 2-4 drugs in your chosen drug classification

[Essay Help]: Legislative Agenda

Legislative Agenda means a program of proposed legislations to support policies and programs of government (Casey, 2020). In this discussion, the main focus is comparing and contrasting the legislative agendas of four nursing organizations, that is; American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, International Council of Nurses, and National Black Nurses Association. Such organizations emerge as effective means by which the nursing profession can influence policy, advocate for quality services, avail continued education opportunities, and protect the interests of nurses. In this case, the organizations tend to come up with legislative agendas and organizational missions to influence attainment of distinct objectives.

American Nurses Association (ANA) aims to advocate for the profession of nursing and the vital role nurses play in improving healthcare for all (Goodman, 2020). The mission of the International Council of Nurses is to represent nurses around the world, to advance the nursing profession, to enhance the well-being of nurses, and to advocate for better health policies. Nursing should be recognized and supported by the global community so that they can lead and deliver health care for everyone, according to the organization’s vision. International Council of Nurses (ICN) and American Nurses Association (ANA) are both dedicated to promoting nursing as a career choice and advancing the interests of nurses worldwide. Advocacy is defined by the ANA Code of Ethics as “the act or process of promoting, supporting, or recommending” a particular course of action (Kershaw, 2017). As nurses, we work tirelessly to improve the lives of individuals, groups, and entire communities. It is our duty to provide the best possible care and ensure the safety of those in our care, and we take this responsibility seriously.

The four major nursing organizations have made significant contributions to the development of public policy. Advocates who actively participate in policymaking are seen as having a distinct advantage over those who do not. The Global Advisory Panel on the Future of Nursing (GAPFON) and Midwifery’s 2014-2017 Summative Report was officially released by Sigma Theta Tau (“Sigma theta tau international,” 2018). The National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) has teamed up with the National Association of Black Nurses to implement the report’s recommendations in this nursing profession’s transformation (Gorham, 2018). To meet the growing demand for high-quality health care, registered nurses must assume leadership roles. When it comes to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and how it intersects with the Future of Nursing’s description of the transformation of nursing, the NBNA is steadfast in its commitment to lead the change and play a key role in implementing strategies that will transform health care and lead us to a healthier nation (Casey, 2020).
