Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.

What is source credibility and why does it matter so much in public health?

Source credibility is when the information is backed by a trusted and supported a credible and scholarly source. Therefore, using sources with academic credibility increases the impact of the message the public health professionals are trying to promote, distribute, or teach. For example, if a public health program is campaigning on the notion that drinking water and reducing sweetened beverage intake will increase the quality of life without any scientific evidence or data to back it, then people are more likely to not believe or practice this action. However, if there is data, such as graphs and scientific reports stating that a clinical trial was done and it showed that drinking water and reducing sweetened beverage intake will increase the quality of life, people will more likely to believe and follow the advice.

Identify at least three credible sources of health and scientific information

There are various ways to identify credible sources for health and scientific information, such as using peer-reviewed journal articles, academic and scholarly sources published or updated in the last 5-10 years, and officially registered educational institution database (JSTOR) and government websites (CDC, EPA, WHO, & HHS) (CDC, 2020).

What are some ways in which public health professionals can combat misinformation or misleading information about health?

Peer review is a way health professionals can combat misinformation about health, therefore, if the author made any errors in their data, their peers or an organization can review the documents to make sure it is factual. Also, clinical trials, data analysis, and research is a way to prevent promoting misleading information.

How will you apply the lessons from this course into serving as a trusted source of accurate, relevant public health information?

I will make sure my data is from peer-reviewed and reliable scholarly sources with no more than 5 years of age since published or updated. This way I will be able to distribute a trusted and accurate source of information relevant to public health.
