Your assignment task is to engage with a real current issue of importance to the Australian people.  You will be asked to choose one of four media stories, each discussing an issue, to engage with.  Alternatively, if you have a particular issue you would like to address that is not one of the choices, you can apply to your lecturer to see if you can base your assignment on your chosen issue.

Essay Format:

The assignment is divided into two parts:  Part 1 consists of four short answer questions, worth a total of 15 marks.  Part 2 consists of a letter to a relevant member of parliament, engaging with the issue.

Part 1:  Short Answer Questions:

1) What is the issue, and why is it important to liberalism, democracy and/or justice? (4 marks)

2) What sources did you use to research the issue?  Briefly explain your research process (4 marks)

3) Briefly explain the different levels of government in Australia.  Which level of government would you target primarily if you wanted to be heard on this issue?  Why?  (4 marks)

4) Who have you chosen to write to about the issue?  Are they a member of the government or opposition?  Why did you choose this person?  (3 marks)
