Source credibility refers to the perceiver judgment regarding the expertise, trustworthiness, or goodwill of a communicator which could be an individual or organization (Jennings, & Russell, 2019). Source credibility plays an important role in public health in shaping the way individuals accept or refuse health messages. If people do not find a source credible, they are less likely to spend time or energy analyzing the message. However, is a source is perceived credible, individuals will mentally engage and pay more attention to understand the message and accept recommendations for behavior change (Jennings, & Russell, 2019).
When it comes to credible sources of health and scientific information, I consider the US Department of Health Human Services and its agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the National Institutes of Health. Besides, websites such as Medline or the National Library of Medicine (NLM) contain an extensive database of peer-reviewed articles and medical literature.
The World Health Organization defined infodemic as the distribution of health information and misinformation and proposed four pillars useful for public health professionals and communicators to manage the spread and adverse effects of misleading information. These pillars highlight the importance of monitoring the health information on the internet and other communication channels, encourage the improvement of fact-checking and peer-reviewed articles, enforce accurate and timely translation without losing the intended message, and reinforce health literacy and science literacy capacity (Eysenbach, 2020).
This course has provided the tools to identify credible sources of health information among the number of inaccurate articles, videos, and reports that pollute the internet and mass media platforms. To serve as a trusted source and provide accurate health information to other individuals and communities, we should investigate not only if the information is accurate but also if the source is reliable and provide facts instead of sentiments or biased opinions.
